CHAPTER SEVEN

October and Orion the Hunter

ORION IS PROBABLY THE MOST recognizable of all the constellations in the northern sky after Ursa Major. It is the one we discover as children, as we learn to spot those three stars of his belt and then the stars around it, marking out his shoulders, knees and feet and, farther out, his club and shield. The fact it is a bright constellation helps also: for the northern hemisphere at least, it starts to become visible in the autumn sky as the nights are beginning to draw in. This combination makes for excellent stargazing. The fact that Orion actually gets easier to see the earlier it gets dark–as autumn turns into winter–means it’s a great constellation for children as well.
